The Art of Happiness- New Years 2017

 

What did you learn? How did you grow? These are the questions we should be asking ourselves as we enter into the New Year. 

 

If we create goals with the idea that "once I have this or once I achieve this, I will be happy", you will never truly achieve happiness. We have been asking you to take a moment over the past couple of months, and this is something that we want to bring into the new year. Instead of making a long list of resolutions or goals, focus on what makes your soul shine. 

In a book titled, The Art of Happiness, a psychiatrist decides to leave his formal occupation to follow the Dalai Lama, and conducts interviews with him. 

"I believe that the very purpose of our life is to seek happiness. That is clear. Whether one believes in religion or not, whether one believes in this religion or that religion, we are all seeking something better in life. So, I think, the very motion of our life is towards happiness". - The Art of Happiness.

 "When I say 'training the mind', in this context I'm not referring to the 'mind' merely as ones cognitive ability and intellect. Rather, I am using the term in the sense of the Tibetan word Sem, which has a much broader meaning, closer to psyche or spirit; it includes intellect and feeling, heart and mind. By bringing about a certain inner discipline, we can undergo a transformation of our attitude, our entire outlook and approach to living. When we speak of this inner discipline, it can of course involve many things, many methods. But generally speaking, one begins by identifying those factors which lead to happiness and those factors which lead to suffering. Having done this, one then sets about gradually eliminating those factors which lead to suffering and cultivating those which lead to happiness. That is the way"- The Art of Happiness. 
Lets drop the term 'new year, new me', and pick up the idea of maintaining happiness.
