Caring For Your Mala: A Step-By-Step Guide

Congratulations! You've purchased a special, handmade Mala. Our Malas have helped centre, inspire, and encourage us, and we hope your new piece provides you with this type of support and much more.

Now that you have a Mala of your own, it's important to learn how to care for it properly. Here are a few notes and precautions we recommend considering:

  • Please be gentle. While our Malas are made to withstand regular, everyday wear, any vigorous activity may lead to breakage or damage. Frequent stretching will weaken the thread overtime and could cause it to snap. Also, we do not recommend wearing your Mala when participating in any heavy physical activity like running, playing soccer, or biking. Our Malas can, however, be worn during gentle yoga and meditation.
  • Avoid getting your Mala wet. In order to ensure the quality of your gemstone or wood Mala does not change dramatically over time, we discourage bathing or swimming with your Mala.
  • Regularly cleanse your Mala. Most of our Malas are made from gemstones which absorb negative energy. If your Mala is not cleansed properly on a regular basis, it could transfer unwanted energies back to you if it becomes too saturated. Cleanse your Mala by leaving it in the moonlight overnight, letting it rest under a tree or in a potted plant, or smudging it with sage or lemongrass.
  • Be cautious of the sun. Some of the lighter gemstones like Rose Quartz may fade if exposed to too much sunlight or fluorescent light. While there's nothing wrong with gemstones changing in the face of the elements, we recognize some of our customers prefer brighter crystals and gems. If you'd rather not see your pieces loose their vibrancy, keep them away from too much light when you're not wearing them.
  • Polish when necessary. Due to their exposure to air and natural oils (from your skin), the Silver and Gold elements on our gemstone jewelry may tarnish. Some like this natural progression, while others prefer shiny spacers, pendants, and chains. To keep the Silver & Gold elements of our pieces shiny, we recommend using a polishing cloth on a regular basis.

Aside from these steps, care for your Mala by using it to its full potential. Set an intention every morning as you place your Mala around your neck. Use the beads to count your mantra during meditation. And be willing and open to share more about your chosen Mala with those who ask about it.
